The Elan Valley has always been a source of inspiration for creative people. 19th Century poet Percy Bysshe Shelley resided here and was compelled to write, “This country is highly romantic; here are rocks of uncommon height and picturesque waterfalls. I am more astonished at the grandeur of the scenery than I expected,” further stating, “I am not wholly uninfluenced by its magic on my lonely walks.” Eustace Tickell, Civil Engineer and supervisor of the construction of Pen-y-Garreg dam expressed his artistic abilities through sketches of the hills and valleys.
Between 2018 and 2023, partnering with CARAD Rhayader Museum and Gallery and Arts Council Wales, thirteen artists from across the world took part in our Elan Links Artist in Residence Program. From sound to vision, a huge variety of work was created in response to the beauty of the Elan Valley. We would like to share this work with you – to find out more, click the name of the artist below.
