Installing Nest Boxes
Wednesday 9th September 10am
Help us to install bird boxes in oak woodland in the Elan Valley.
For this opportunity we will meet at the Elan Valley Trust at 10am and expect to be finished back at the Elan Valley Trust by 3pm.
We have some bird boxes that will need to be installed in oak woodlands. These need to be securely attached to the trees using screws and a drill / impact driver, numbered and the exact location recorded, to allow our bird monitoring
volunteers to locate the nest boxes. On one site we will also be cleaning out the nest boxes that we put up the previous year (wearing gloves). No experience necessary. Training will be given.
Peatland Restoration
Peatland restoration is the process of re-wetting and repairing damaged bogs to lock in carbon and revive natural habitats. Join the Elan Valley Peat team and help them with this incredibly valuable work.
Women’s Group Volunteering
Join our new women’s volunteer group in the Elan Valley.
We will meet on the second Thursday of the month at 10am.
Our tasks will be an opportunity to experience the wellbeing benefits of being in nature, connect with others and learn new skills.
Each week we will carry out a conservation task which will include:
Collecting tree seeds
Propagation
Invasive species removal
Installing bird boxes
Peatland restoration projects
Surveys
Many other opportunities
No experience is necessary – training will be given for each task.
Dark Sky Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers who would like to help us to monitor our night skies and / or help with dark sky events. No experience is necessary for any of these tasks as full training will be given and all equipment will be provided for all opportunities:
SQM Readings – measuring night sky quality
Help with public events
Delivering planetarium shows
No experience is necessary – we are looking for people that are enthusiastic, good with the public and willing to teach..
BSBI New Year’s Plant Hunt

Join us for a New Year Plant Hunt!
The New Year Plant Hunt is the Botanical Society’s flagship outreach activity, enabling botanists of all abilities to take part in a regular, planned, and supported recording activity.
Each year, across a set of days around New Year, intrepid botanists of all ages and abilities set out to record which wild plants they can find in bloom.
By recording the wild plants in flower in your local patch in the depths of winter, you can help us gather valuable data about how our wild or naturalised plants are responding to a changing climate, and how this might impact the other species that rely upon them.
